Weeknotes

|

6 minutes

I’m really glad that the sun has come out. The last few weeks of cold and grey have been super annoying. The good news is that we’re no longer down to minus temperatures at night as of this week. So we got everything out into the garden (though I’m not sure my cucumbers are going to make it). We are growing a shit ton of kale this year – can’t wait.

I’ve been for a few walks along the river into town this week. The old man was looking lovely in the spring sunshine each time.

Things are real busy in the market which is nice. But in the main, it does seem like people are avoiding the main shops.

Anyways, we had some friends over last night and I drank a lot out in the garden. I’m feeling pretty ropey as a result. Thats why this post doesn’t have a very imaginative title lol.

It’s a good job that I start compiling these weeknotes on a Wednesday.

Permanently Moved

Have a Nice Day

The phrase ‘Have a Nice Day’ is not generally used in the United Kingdom due to its perceived insincerity. Besides it’s bad for your health.

The Ministry Of My Own Labour

I’ve spent the week catching up on writing commitments. I’m nearly done.

I have two texts that need submitting ASAP. (Really sorry if you are reading this). One of which is about the Metaverse.

I was speaking to a friend a while back who writes a lot of commissioned work. Based on their advice I’ve been following this process for essay writing.

Sharing as it might be of some benefit to others.

  1. Sit down and splurge as much as I can down in one or two sittings on the same day.
  2. Wait a couple of days whilst reading around all the subjects I wished I mentioned in the first draft.
  3. Sit down and write another essay from scratch for 40mins to an hour. Include all the thoughts I’ve had since doing the reading since the first essay.
  4. Mash them together. Copy pasting
  5. Read it, edit and rewrite
  6. Deliver draft
  7. Get feedback and do all the edits

It’s really helped me become far less precious over my writing. So I now take the feedback on my writing much better than I have done in the past.

I think this is largely because the thing I’m delivering is the product of two separate writing events, and not one log slog that I’ve put loads of mental energy into and laboured over.

It all shakes out as about the same amount of effort in the long run.

Walking through doorways causes forgetting: Further explorations: The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology: Vol 64, No 8

Previous research using virtual environments has revealed a location-updating effect in which there is a decline in memory when people move from one location to another.

Jack Ma’s double whammy marks end of the golden age for Chinese tech firms – Taipei Times

The company’s most lucrative credit-lending arm is to be capped based on registered capital. It must fold its Huabei and Jiebei loan units — which had 1.7 trillion yuan (US$261 billion) of outstanding loans between them as of June last year — into a new national company that would likely have to raise more capital to support its operations.

By August 2019, Mohammed was alone but for the occasional guard and trapped on a vessel with no diesel and, consequently, no power. He was legally obliged to stay aboard and was unpaid, demoralised and feeling increasingly unwell.

Spotify Selves

Ultimately Spotify wants to turn the environmental factors into behavioral triggers — a certain time of day will require certain streamed content to feel “real” or feel right — to make you feel like “yourself.”

Reading

Apprenticed to a Himalayan Master: A Yogi’s Autobiography by Sri M.

I was saying to someone during the week that if you aren’t open to all the weird shit that – is possible/actually happens – in the world this book probably isn’t for you and probably reads like fiction.

This is the story of how a young muslim boy had a spiritual experience under a jackfruit tree and years later became a Yogi apprenticed to the Maheshwarnath Babaji. Who in turn was a disciple of Sri Guru. See also Paramahansa Yogananda’s amazing Autobiography of a Yogi for more info about Mahavatar Babaji and the ‘Babaji activity’.

I was actually told to read this book by someone and I’m glad I did. Spritual work is a lot of hard work.

Constellation Games by Leonard Richardson

I was looking though my kindle the other night for something to read and I saw this right at the bottom of the purchased list. I’m not really one for re-reading books but I downloaded it and now find myself over 60% of the way though.

Constellation Games is a story about how a video games blogger get caught up in drama and bullshit after arrival of a galaxy spanning anarchist multi species civilisation called ‘The Constellation’ to earth. The book is a wonderful exploration of speculative alien anthropology, games, politics, AI and more.

I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed this book the first time I read it. Though I *may* have recommended at some point during my appearance on Interdependence.fm?

The next book in the Ciaphas Cain series just came out, I used my Audible credit on that so I’m dropping everything and I’m going to start listening to that LOL.

Ducky – If U Miss Me (EP)

New ducky!

The release notes for the whole EP read “i wrote an ep for a girl i loved but we broke up so now i’m giving it to u”.

The track If U Need Me is a synth drenched pop banger imo. It’s far less aggressive and abrasive than the Hyper Bloxxd single from last year.

I really love the sound of the opening square synth on this track. It fills the sound space wonderfully. Then gets pulled right back in the mix when the treble synths come in at the 25 second mark. Really subtle production, that moment sounds great on headphones.
