Birthday + Bristol

5 minutes

It was my 37th birthday on Monday. Then we went down to the city of Bristol for a few nights away. So good!

But so tired now though.

I got a Tamagotchi to put on my keys 🙂

This time last year I was recovering from Covid, and subsequently ended up writing off the next 3-4months last year recovering. I didn’t get my full ability to smell back until March of this year.

We went to Tofu Vegan in Upper Street it was some of the best Chinese food I’ve ever eaten. Period.

I’ve embedded my tumblr photos so you can see the food. It was amazing.

After lunch, we got gelato from the place next door, and then went down to south London for some drinks with friends.

I forgot to take an anti-histamine the next day and felt awful all day. By the time I remembered to take it just after lunch – it was too late.

The outside had already poisoned me for the day.

Very sad.

Lovely Birthday tho.

Tuesday was spent sorting things out, closing down and out work stuff before driving to Bristol.

The rest of this post is photoblog heavy.

Went to Bristol at the weekend.

It was amazing to get away, see friends, hang out with Eve. It was really cool to see a city I haven’t been to for nearly 20(!) years. Bristol is a city deserving of its ‘Best vegan city in Europe’

Some highlights!

R O O T

We had the lunch with some friends at R O O T, the vegan/vegetarian restaurant. (It’s in the Michelin guide). Absolutely unreal. Highly recommend.

WetWare @ Strange Brew

We saw Aevi & Moral Fibre, Thomas R & Jason Baker, and IDM stalwart Stormfield at a venue called Strange Brew. A really cool community space and indie venue in a (old shop?) building in the centre of the city. Launched and run by crowed funding it was an amazing space. Also, it was really cool to be able to meet up with someone for beers and have them say ‘There’s some weird electronica going on tonight wanna come?’. The answer was yes obviosuly

As you can imagine there was a lot of beards and backpacks at this gig.

Bridges, Bars, More Food

Awesome away break.

There are many things that I would like to say to you about the past 48 hours in UK politics, days which saw the Online Safety Bill abruptly kicked into the long grass, possibly never to return.

Fixing the UK’s Online Safety Bill, part 0: no, it’s not fixable.

He characterised Mayism by four values which reflected Theresa May’s very…distinct personality, worldview, and political beliefs:

Reading

I inhaled The Dark City by Chris Wraight. A thrilling conclusion to his Vaults of Terra series. Very Grim, Very Dark, Very Excellent.

Started plugging away at Mathew Ball’s Metaverse book. I’ve had it on pre-order since it was announced. Yet now it’s here I’m reluctant to read it.

I bought Proving Ground: The Untold Story of the Six Women Who Programmed the World’s First Modern Computer by Kathy Kleiman.

Having finished reading Eniac: The Triumphs and Tragedies of the World’s First Computer just the other week, I know there is A LOT of first hand material, video interviews in the library of congress, diaries, etc from these women. But it is the first book *About them* Looking forward to reading it!

Still looking for a good biography of Grace Hopper. If you can suggest one, comments are open below.

Cave World – Viagra Boys

Viagra Boys (previously) are a really nasty punk band. Once heard and enjoyed, thats it, you are a fan for life. But you can’t ever wash the stench out your ears.

Their new album is fantastic. We listened to it on the drive back from Bristol. It’s the first punk album I’ve heard that feels bound up in the pandemic era we’ve just lived though. Like previous Viagra Boys albums, this one pins caricatures of others to the wall and makes them squirm. Track 5 Creepy Crawlers for example sees frontman Sebastian Murphy spouting wild anti-vaxx content about bugs in the vaccines.

Opening track Baby Criminal opens with the bands favourite subject. Overgrown Man Children.

Track 9. Big Boy is a Blue-y rant featuring Jason Williamson from Sleaford Mods. its a song about over grown men with thin skin who do all the things society has told them to do, pay rent, collect nice trainers:

I need something makes a dude feel real
I got a big hat on that makes me look like a cowboy from a film

It’s a really harsh track, skewing the archetype completely. It would be devastating if some of my friends from school ever heard it. Not that the type of people this song is attacking listen any music made after they turned 30…

I’m also really into the production of this album. It sounds great.
