Packed Calendar

5 minutes

Things are still non-stop over here at Jaymo industries.

Onn Jan 1st I sat down for 2 hours and wrote a huge list of things that need doing. A massive brain dump of all sorts of things that needed addressing, updating, sorting out etc. I am 22 days later, still working though it. I have ‘things to do‘ scheduled into mid-Feb.

So on top of the usual weekly tasks, I’ve ended up with a packed Todoist calendar full of items big and small. Some of which are quite large tasks that i’m chipping away at daily. 200 words on this, 400 words on that.

Quite a lot of the tasks are things that, If I was someone with my shit together I would have been on top of. I’ve updated all sorts of copy all over my blog, update my LinkedIn ‘about me’ for the first time since 2018, updated spreadsheets, sent invoices, put all my warhammer magazines in chronological order, bagged comicbooks and so on and so on…

It’s probably the new year/new moon, but theres a real ‘grindset’ going on for me right now. I’m really enjoying it, one I’m though this period with a huge amount of momentum and study platform I hope I can push things forward this year.

Speaking of things I’m enjoying, I’ve been using Automattic’s Day One Journal App for a month, and this weekend went ‘all in’ and paid for it. I have about 8 years of diary entries in google docs that I need to copy paste, review and tag. I’m really glad I reviewed, collated, tided all my digital diaries up during the depths of the pandemic, as todays 2011-2014 copy paste session (only about 200 entries) went really smoothly. I want to add to the pile of blogs out there gushing about Day One, but I want to live with the app for a few more months before I write a review.

Good Taste Online

Given the affordances of different social media platforms … How does one demonstrate taste in the digital realm?

The Ministry Of My Own Labour

As I said in my introduction, I’ve been focused on ploughing though what feels like a years worth of backlog I should have stayed on top of in 2022. Website stuff particular takes fucking hours. One thing continues to lead to another as I try to complete my new years brain dump list of things to do.

The only client work i’ve done is build a spreadsheet based on stripe data. I have 2 more to build next week

Terminal Access

My friend the artist and ceramicist, Anna Bingham, has started blogging. Kicking off her first post with a video diary film shot during the cold snap back in December. It’s very ‘Anna’. The video’s wild aspect ratio changes are exactly what I would expect from someone who works with IRL materials. Click though and check it out maybe sign up to her newsletter whilst you’re there?

I can’t promise what’s happening with Twitter is just the public meltdown of a malignant narcissist. I can’t promise it’s not more practice. Twitter is much bigger, much more influential, and much more ingrained into the fabric of modern society than Livejournal ever was. It’s a big bite to swallow. But it’s happened before.

Reading

Still reading How to Read a Book by M.J. Adler its taking forever to get though it, due to its nature it requires close reading. The effort required to read this book is about 5 Warhammer novels – which is now going to be my measuring stick for everything.

Ignition!: An informal history of liquid rocket propellants is absolutely fantastic. I’m reading this slowly too because there’s a lot of math and chemistry I keep looking up on wikipedia.

Rick Rubins book The Creative Act: A Way of Being arrived!!! I knew it was going to be good, but what an incredible book. I’m not done with it yet but it’s my generations The Artists Way or The War of Art. Similar but different. Rubin demands much of his reader.

The Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr – Jazz, Jazz, Jazz

What an album! I came across it on Bandcamp this week, and on first listen I *almost* pulled the trigger on the LP! Jazz, Jazz, Jazz the only album recorded by Sudanese band The Scorpions back in 1980.

Despite its name, Jazz, Jazz, jazz feels more like a pop-funk album with Jazz solos. The chord progressions and vocal melodies speak to the Arabic influence of that reason of Africa. But where this album truly shines is in its rhythm. Incredible.

Looking for more information about them, I found this Bandcamp Album of the Day review from 2018. Its very sad that political instability and war prevented these guys from making any more music together.
