Episode 250

Holy crap 250 episodes. That’s nearly a quarter million words of script and over 20 hours of audio since March 2018.

I said back in Episode 100 that doing something a 100 times is about the right amount of time to decide if you like doing something. And here I am 150 episodes later still doing the same thing. I must obviously enjoy it.

A 100 episodes ago I talked about my struggles with stats and download numbers. That was during year two of the pandemic and I hadn’t seen anyone for 18 months. Like many people in less trying circumstances, I had fallen into the trap of using them as a proxy for self worth. But as I said at the end of last year, I got some advice in 2022 which went along the lines of ‘Care about your stats till 100k. Care again at 1 million’. Seeing as I’m well past the 100k all time mark I’ve spent this year trying not to care.

In previous years I’ve shared the show’s stats and download numbers. But this time around I’ll just say the top line numbers have been static. However, I’ll will be finishing up the year in 2 weeks time having made 40 episodes and not 50. So whilst numbers may be static the show is continuing to grow.

I just got back from the Autonomous Worlds Assembly at in Istanbul – more on that next week – and one of the best things about the trip was meeting people who listen to 301. If you are one of those people, it was really lovely speaking with you. I enjoyed all our conversations, and please do shoot me an email via the contact form on my website. And also let me reassure you, as it came up more than once, that I think meeting a podcaster who’s show you enjoy is weird too. Like some kind of surreal live action interactive podcast. Haha.

I’d also like to say a big thank you to all the current and past paid supporters of the show. You keep the lights on, and in part motivated to keep going. Making Start Select Reset zine, getting it printed, writing your names on envelopes and, putting it in the post, has been a highlight of my creative life. Not just this past year but overall. It’s something I really enjoy doing.

If you are listening to this and would like to support the show at its now venerable age of 250 episodes. Please head to thejaymo.net/support and you’ll be on the mailing list in time for Issue 8 in December.

I’m going to be doing some other print projects next year under the Start Select Reset moniker. I have an 8000 word, 30 page essay called Abracadabra that I gave as a lecture to the Writing the Impossible course at the New Centre. I’m really proud of it and will be doing a limited print run of it in A5 on nice paper.

I’m also going to collect ‘The Artist‘ series I’ve been making here throughout 2023 as a self pub zine too.

Paid supporters will get first dibs on the pre-orders and a limited edition version with a hand printed covers. And maybe free shipping, but I need to run the numbers. So if you want to support the show, get discounts on these upcoming artefacts from me then get on the mailing list and receive start select zine 4 times a year at thejaymo.net/support

Speaking of next year…

I have a little announcement

There’s only going to be 30 episodes next year. I’m going to Thailand for Eve’s 40th birthday for most of January and after 5 years and 250 episodes I’d like a break longer than 2 weeks.

Fear not, however, I won’t be disappearing.

I have a new show!

My new interview show Experience.Computer is launching in December once 301 is wrapped. The trailer and Episode 1 will be dropping on this feed, and Episode 2 will also be available on the show’s feed at the same time. But you’ll have to head over there and subscribe to hear it.

The show will be monthly with 5 episodes in a season. Episode 3 will be dropping in Jan.

It’s an interview show about imagination styles, creativity, and what we make of the tools we use to make our art. I’ve put a lot of effort into it and I can’t wait to share it with you all. It’s the complete opposite of 301. I’m going from tightly scripted 5 min audio essays to a 90 min plus interview show that’s not afraid of dead air. If you’re interest is piqued, you can sign up to receive announcements and updates over on substack at the experience.computer

So that’s about it for me.

To Recap.

I’ve made 250 episodes of 301 now and I’m now thinking about what its going to take to get to 500. If you want to help me get there, support my work and the show at thejaymo.net/support. In return you’ll get a zine in the post 4 times a year, and the chance to pre-order and get discounts on other IRL artefacts I’m going to be making in future.

Thank you all so much for listening, it’s a real honour to have this platform and to have an audience full of so many amazing and inspiring people.

Speak to you all again next week.
